Skin Bureaux have been invited to participate in a pioneering study with the University of Newcastle.
We are working with Professor Mark Birch Machin, a molecular dermatologist from Newcastle University.
He currently has services that help support skin care product claims for mitochondrial DNA protection, a key biomarker for anti- ageing, which allows for products to ultimately make scientifically backed results-driven honest product marketing claims for total transparency with our Skin Bureaux valuable customers.
In the medium term they want to put their non-invasive test in the hands of the end consumer, which will allow for skin conscious consumers to track their skin health and visibly see the improvement that the product is making.
In addition, further benefits include:
- Scientific credibility for Skin Bureaux
- Repeatable results
- Quantifiable and actionable information
Skin Life Analytics are an expert skin testing company that spun out of Newcastle University in June 2022 and they can make what is currently invisible visible. They do this through skin mitochondrial DNA testing, and this is because the mitochondria are the batteries of our cells and an increase in damage ultimately leads to skin ageing.
Skin Life Analytics technology can detect damage before any visible signs of ageing are present and therefore play an important part of ongoing skin health monitoring and anti-ageing interventions. They are world leading in being able to measure the level of mitochondria damage in skin and all it requires is a skin swab, which is completely pain free and non-invasive.
River Aesthetics and Skin Life Analytics are collaborating and have undertaken a study.
We know that mitochondria play an important role in skin ageing. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors contribute to mitochondrial DNA damage and therefore leads to accelerated skin ageing. The aim of the study is to validate the use of skin swabs in detecting mitochondrial DNA damage and repair in those who use Skin Bureaux serums, and the level of collagen and thickness of skin layers (epidermis and dermis) changes will also be determined using our Visia skin analysis system.
This study involves using a non-exfoliating face wash, our Super Defense antioxidant serum, SPF 50 and our Rest & Reset night cream for 8 consecutive weeks
After 8 weeks, the results collected will be assessed
Who has reviewed the study?
All research conducted is looked at by an independent group of people, called a Research Ethics Committee, to protect participant interests, this has been reviewed by the Newcastle University Research Ethics Committee.
What will happen to the results of the study?
The results of the study may be published in a scientific journal and presented at academic conferences and meetings. It will also be used for commercial ventures. For Skin Bureaux this is a way of collecting objective evidence to support our claims.
We will be publishing the results of the study in July 2023.
